Gigabit broadband in action - Nuco International case study

Coventry-based global business plans growth thanks to the DCMS Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme. In our gigabit in action case study Nuco International’s IT & Project Manager, Mark Langan, discusses how ultrafast broadband is digitally transforming its business operations

One of the first businesses to take advantage of the pilot DCMS Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme was Nuco International. Nuco International is a British company which provides top quality paper products for retail, grocery and office markets, based in Coventry with another office in Hong Kong.

Until December, the company had enjoyed download speeds of 100 Mbit/s and upload speeds of 40 Mbit/s. This was more than enough speed for their IT needs, but when Mark decided to migrate to cloud-based Microsoft Office 365, it became apparent the increased pull of data from the cloud had an impact on the speed of connectivity.

The need for (broadband) speed

Taking the next logical step to digitally transform the business, Mark contacted WarwickNet to enquire about an affordable solution, which would be scalable and allow for further transitions to the cloud.

“We were already keen on upgrading our infrastructure to full fibre-to-the-premise (FTTP), but the Gigabit Voucher Scheme made it a much more cost-effective solution,” said Mark. “We’re now getting three times the speed for no extra cost.

“WarwickNet was previously responsible for upgrading our connectivity by installing a fibre cabinet on our business park. We were previously reliant on ADSL – which had no speed at all and came from a cabinet three miles away. The process of upgrading to full fibre to our office was relatively hassle free. The support team were on hand and sorted out everything within a day.”

Nuco International now enjoys ultrafast download speeds of 250 Mbit/s and upload speeds of 50 Mbit/s. “Most importantly, we’re getting the same speed as was promised to us,” added Mark.

“It’s allowed us to think about what else we can put in the cloud. The next thing we’re looking at is transferring our hosting servers. It’s great to have the option.”

The importance of being ‘Gigabit ready’

For many businesses, requiring ultrafast speeds of 1 billion bits per second can seem a long way off as a necessity.

But as the industry and Government develop their business connectivity solutions with the help of the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme, preparing for the future is easier, and more practical than ever.

However, simply knowing that they have the capability and can cross that bridge when they need to is a major plus.

“We’ve got an office in Hong Kong and, with operations continuing to grow, transitioning to the cloud will allow us to increase our scalability. We have the infrastructure in place which will continue to allow us to grow,” concluded Mark.
